Rethinking University: It’s More Than Just Books

Updated: Jun 4

university: more than just books

When you think of university, you probably picture lecture halls, textbooks, and the non-stop quest for that degree, right? But what if there's more to it? What if a university is actually a gateway to a life-changing experience that's about way more than just academics?

People often think of universities as just places for education, studying, and getting a degree. But it's not just about that. It's more about personal growth and gaining knowledge. Some say the education system is 'broken,' and I totally agree. The current syllabus doesn't really prepare you for the challenges of real life.

The university indirectly exposes you to the real world, not just through education, but also through experience. Being around others with a similar mindset is beneficial.

If you are planning to attend a university to study, you might want to reconsider. Knowledge is readily available on the internet through communities, peer groups, Discord channels, Reddit, and more. You can definitely acquire knowledge from these sources. Paying high fees for a university degree may not be worth it.

I'm not saying you shouldn't go to a university, don't get me wrong. One should go to a university for sure. But if you are going to university 'just' for education, you are definitely not growing.

The education system has been in practice for over 100 years and is a bit outdated. Some concepts, such as exams, do help with discipline, but I think they are outdated. There are other ways to instill discipline in students.

My mindset upon entering university was focused on networking and starting a new chapter, and it certainly paid off. One should attend university for networking, experiences, exposure, failures, sleepless nights, fun, and, of course, knowledge.

University was a bank of new opportunities. Sure, studies went along as it is a part of the degree, but I learned a lot about life. I made friends from all walks of life, interned, failed, spoke on stage, started a business, and learned about new concepts, psychology, and economics. I also went to the gym, as fitness is important.

University, just like life, is a whole journey, it’s more than just books. Sure, knowledge is important, but it's the mix of experiences, connections, and personal growth that really shapes who we are. Next time you think about university, remember it's not just about getting that degree, but all the awesome experiences that make the whole ride worth it.
